Quick Tips for Common Problems
Common problems:
If you try these with no success, call our Help Desk at 644-HELP (4357).
1. Beeps on the line
Callers complain that their phone rings every five minutes and that when they answer the call, there is an "electronic device" calling them. It sounds like a series of beeps on the line.
Problem: A fax machine dialing in. Fax machines are notorious for doing this. Someone is trying to send a fax, but somehow sent it to the wrong phone number. You will continue receiving this "annoying" call until the fax gets through.
Solution: Forward your line to your fax line for approximately ten minutes. Once the fax gets through, your telephone line will be cleared of this problem.

How do I forward my telephone line?
Establish dial tone and dial *72 (feature activation code), dial the fax number exactly the way you would dial it from your phone (4-xxxx), listen for the signal, and release.

How do I unforward my telephone line?
Establish dial tone and dial *73 (feature deactivation code), listen for the signal, and release.

2. Busy Signals
Problem: A line is reaching a busy signal, but it really is not in use.
Solution: Chances are, it is call forwarded incorrectly. A good give away is when the telephone can't receive calls, but can still make outgoing calls.

Press "call forward cancel" button or simply lift the handset, dial *73 (feature deactivation code) and hang up.

Problem: Sometimes callers will complain of a busy signal when the handset is lifted to listen for a dial tone.
Solution: A good way to describe what they are hearing is a "chopped-up" (stutter) dial tone. This is a message indicator, and the phone is letting you know that there is a new message on voice mail.

From the line with the "chopped-up" dial tone, dial 4-6245 to access voice mail messages. Once new messages are heard, the stutter dial tone will clear.

3. Can make calls but cannot receive them
Problem: If a line is not receiving calls (but it can still make them), chances are it is call forwarded. The calls are probably going to another phone.
Solution: Press the "call forward cancel" button or simply lift the handset, dial *73 (feature deactivation code) and hang up. This will clear the line and allow calls to be received.
4. Display does not work
Problem: Chances are the power supply is not plugged in correctly.
Solution: Simply disconnect the power supply, count to ten, then reconnect the power supply to the electricial outlet.

Locations of the power supply may differ between phones:

M2317--power supply is connected directly at the rear of the phone.
M8314, M8417, M9316 & M9417--power supply is connected at the bottom of the phone.
M2112, M5112, M5312. Unity VII (has no display, only the speaker) Unity II (line is speaker) -- The line cord leaves the phone and connects into a small box that resembles a jack. This small box is part of the power supply. The power supply then continues and plugs into the electrical outlet.

5. I am getting someone else's calls
Problem: A telephone is forwarded to your line.
Solution: It may be possible that someone has accidentally forwarded their line to yours. When this happens to you, ask the caller what number they have dialed. Then call us at 644-HELP (4357) to have the call forwarding removed from that line.
6. Can't make a long distance call
Problem: I cannot make a long distance call.
Solution: 1. First check for proper dialing capabilities by dialing 29 on your phone.

2. The telephone will tell you a number which is your class of service.

3. Verify your class of service here or consult page iii of your seminole guide to make sure that you are allowed to make long distance calls from your phone.

4. To change your class of service call consult your departmental representative and fill out a Telecommunications Service Request order form. For SUNCOM dialing instructions click here.

7. I need to change my Class of Service
Problem: The phone I am using has the wrong class of service.
Solution: Fill out a Telecommunications Service Request order form to request a change of service.
8. Message light doesn't work
If a message light once worked, but now it does not, there could be several reasons for this.
Problem: Phone is on the wrong setting.
Solution: If you have a Unity phone, check the "CSL-STD" setting and make sure that it is on the STD mode as follows:

Unity VII Models -- (dip switch) set at STD
Unity 2-line Models -- (slide switch) set at STD
Unity III Models -- (dip switch) set at STD

Problem: Bad instrument
Solution: Instrument may need to be replaced. To replace an instrument call our Customer Care at 644-HELP (4357). For a new instrument submit a Telecommunications Service Request order form.
9. The phone rings and no one is there
Problem: This is a modem calling your line, and like the fax machine, it will continue to dial until it gets through.
Solution: When you get this call, you must stay on the line long enough for the modem signal to get through. This may sometimes take 60 seconds. Listen for a beep, then hang up.
10. Ringer volume
Problem: The phone rings too loudly or not loud enough.
Solution: Adjust ringer volumes as follows while the phone is ringing:
Note: If you adjust the volume while the phone is not ringing, you will adjust the voice volume.
ITT Models -- switch located at the back of the phone.
Meridian, Unity III, Unity II, & Unity VII -- switch located at the bottom of the phone.
11. Voice mail password is lost or unknown
Problem: My voice mail password has been lost or is not known for some reason.
Solution: Submit a Telecommunications Service Request asking that the passcode on that number be reset to 1234.
12. I want my phone to ring longer before voice mail picks up.
Problem: I want my phone to ring longer before voice mail picks up.
Solution: Submit a Telecommunications Service Request asking that rings be added before voice mail picks up on your phone number.
13. My speaker phone does not work.
Problem: Chances are the power supply is not plugged in correctly.
Solution: See solution #4.
14. My voice mail passcode does not work.
Problem: I enter my passcode and hear "I'm sorry, I didn't get your passcode."
Solution: Cortelco phone has T/P switch on the right side of the phone. Place switch in 'T' (tone) position before dialing into your voice mail.
